New Cars: the EOFY market update

Buying a car before EOFY? Here's where the market's at
We've teamed up with Autofetch to source new vehicles, which usually means we can get sharper pricing and priority access to stock. Here's their current read on the market.
Fuel prices have shifted demand and opened a window for diesel buyers
The recent jump in fuel prices has pushed more buyers toward hybrids, PHEVs and EVs. But there are still plenty of diesel buyers out there, and right now it's actually a good time to be one brands with diesel stock are more motivated to deal. We don't think EVs and hybrids "take over" from diesel here the way they have in parts of Europe; in Australia we still need diesels for towing and long-distance driving.
Ford's the standout
The clear value at the moment is Ford. There's solid discounting on Ranger and Everest runout stock heading into EOFY excess stock plus softer diesel demand makes it a good time to buy. We've recently seen Everest Platinum stock come down by a few thousand dollars off usual pricing depending on spec. Treat that as indicative only: these discounts don't last, and once stock thins they'll pull back.
Toyota's the exception, as usual Prado and LandCruiser 300 still have very limited supply and long wait times, with demand staying high.
Thinking EV or hybrid? A few things people forget to weigh up
EVs, PHEVs and hybrids suit some buyers and not others. Before you sign, factor in:
- Charging costs — without solar you're at the mercy of electricity prices, which have historically risen faster than fuel
- Depreciation — sharper on EVs than petrol or hybrid. We looked at a 9-month-old BYD that had already dropped around $18k
- Range — will it actually cover your daily driving?
- Charging access — if you're in a strata complex, getting a charger installed and approved can be costly
- Entry price — even the sharp-value Chinese EVs still cost more up front than the equivalent petrol or diesel, and people forget to look at that number
None of this is a reason not to buy one plenty of these cars are excellent. It's just the stuff worth knowing before you commit.
